Pinsperation: Mori Girls (Or How Meghan Discovered Her New Favorite Thing)
Thanks to Pinterest, I have discovered my new favorite thing in the world. It's the "Mori Girl" style. See, I was happily pinning away over on the women's fashion category when I saw a few pictures of these Japanese girls in pretty floral dresses with tights and boots. I fell in love! Also, I loved it because this seemed to be a style I already had most of the pieces for. I saw the tumblr source and I clicked over and discovered the world of Mori girls. (And apparently it's not a new thing- its actually almost over according to google, but I don't care because it's awesome.)
This style is perfect for vintage loving girls who also like boots and layering up like a bag lady (ahemMEahem). Here is the Wiki How page on Mori girls - CLICK HERE. I watch a ton of anime, but Honey and Clover is one I'd never watched so I'm unfamiliar with the character that inspired this style. I'm going to need to go look it up on Netflix or Hulu now.
Here are my favorite looks, linked mostly to the sources rather than the pins. I've already bookmarked ohyeahmorigirls on tumblr because they have the best pictures over there. I love the styling! Shabby chic, but also kind of vintage and punky.
This is one of my favorite looks because of the raggedy sweater and the deep colors. Usually, according to wiki, the Mori girls favor lighter colors. So this look being darker and bolder would work well in winter, which is approaching in my neck of the woods. I also adore this hat!
I love the pink sweater with embroidery on it, and I like the top layer of the dress. I would never wear that much white because I know I would spill something on myself, but I think she looks so cute! I like her little pink booties, too!
Like I've said before, I need to start doing more creative things with my hair, and that means this winter I'll be making fascinators and flower pins and all kinds of things. I like the abstractness of this piece and the dried flowers, and I'm a huge fan of lace already so I'm sold! I think I'll be keeping this in mind as I create new things for my currently unadorned noggin.
I liked that the tumblr I spent time on looking for Mori girl pictures had non-Japanese style ladies, too. These ladies look adorable and while I don't think I'll be wearing ankle-length bloomers anytime soon, I love the dress on the blond lady. Even my mom said she'd wear these!
I have a hat like this. I never wear it. I think I might need to try again because this girl is like a tomboy Mori girl. I love her jeans under the dress look!
This is the pin that started me on this quest Sunday morning. I saw this dress and I just fell in love with her whole look. I love the flowers, the colors, the lace tights and boots- she's so cute. And she looks warm, which will be nice in the coming fall. I love her headpiece, too!
Again, I would never wear this much white (especially to work!!) but I loved her cardigan and her boots so much I had to share them with you. And I think this would be easy to DIY.
Finally, while I was going through my pins, trying to find pictures of these girls to show you, I found this dress from Anthropologie. I pinned it a while ago and forgot about it (even though it is beautiful) and it's now out of stock. I love the style, with the exposed shoulders and layered patched colors, and I think this would be pretty easy to DIY. I thought it fit with the Mori trend- very vintage, very natural looking and easy to wear.
I guess that's one of my favorite parts of this trend- it looks so easy to wear! And comfortable!!
A few posts back I wondered how to reconcile two sides of my wardrobe, especially in this coming fall season. I think this might be an answer. Carefully selected Mori inspired pieces would translate well to both punk looks and Free-People-Inspired desert chic looks, and then Mori on it's own would be nice, too. I think if I keep this style in mind as I craft up new things that I might be able to give my current wardrobe a more coherent flow, which is something it is definitely lacking. This also would reconcile my natural tomboyish nature with my desire to be super girly. I'm going to have to think on it, but I'm so glad I discovered this trend.
AAAAAND this would also look great with some of my Steampunk costume pieces.
What new trends have you discovered lately?
PS: On the day that I discovered this stuff, my friend posted a link on her facebook to a P!NK video- her style reminded me of this post and I wanted to share it with you. I love P!NK- I have since I was 15. So here you go!
wow i love this video the whole mirroring dance thing is so artful. love the pretty dress on the picnic though. i can totally see you fitting this style dear
I've long been in love with the mori girl look. I like the believe some of my outfits are influenced by them. I just don't think I'm frilly enough to pass off most looks, that and I look wretched in beige. I definitely spend a lot of time browsing Japanese street fashion for inspiration. Lolita (not costume-y lolita, but closer to the mint floral look you posted) was a huge dream of mine that I never got to realize due to being a Poor Kid growing up.
I definitely plan on pushing my boundaries this winter and work on carefully crafted layered looks.
Oh, this style is so gorgeous! I'd never heard of it before, and I love it! It seems like Japan is always pushing the envelope with fashion & making something new and lovely. :)
I'm a big P!nk fan too! My Mum tried twice to score us tickets to her last Australian tour, and it sold out faster than Mum could click the buttons both times. :(
Megan Mae- Ohhhhh Lolita!!!! I was also not able to afford that look growing up and I love it. I love anything Japanese Street Style, really. Fruits is always a huge inspiration to me. :-) I think you look kind of Mori, actually. I really love your harness belt. I kind of need one now.
Stacey- I love it! I'm hooked! I'm hooked on the interior decorating Mori looks, too. They are all vintage and spare and white with feathers and pictures- oh so cute! I wish I could have seen P!NK, but alas. She's one of the few people I love that I haven't seen live. I bet she's awesome.
