"I'm writing this review as a I go along. This is one of the first
According to the back, I would be a two sizes larger than my usual "dress size". So I did make a muslin of that size and it was just enormous! So I did one size larger than my usual dress size, going by what they list the finished garment as instead of your starting measurements, and it worked out pretty well.
I was a little disappointed with the collar being an applique. I had hoped that it would be a real working button collar and I could learn something. I mean, I already had an A-Line shift dress pattern that I drafted myself.
Day Three: "Have sewn dress. This is really baggy and loose. I can put little belt loops on each side and add a sash, which makes it better in the front but worse in the back. Also, the neck is incredibly high. So I'll have to fix that, too, which makes me sad.I could try a smaller size but I feel that would be too tight. Oh what do do?"
That was written before I sized down and did the original muslin. The original muslin was huge. I was swimming in it. The sized down version is still not a small dress- it's a touch baggy, but it's tunic style so with a belt or elastic waist it would be an easy fix. I kind of like it as is, but you know I like things to be loose.
Day Four: "Eff this dress! Eff it in the face."
Midnight last night I was trying to finish this and that was the first thing I could thing to type. I got lazy and ditched the weird applique faux-button placket thing and just lined the neck. All in all, I'm pretty happy with the results. Check it out!!
So I gave this the shoe test. You have to try on a dress with Chucks, Docs, Toms, and Flats to make sure they really pass the test (in this household anyway). Definite pass.
I like it. I will make more of these. Do I feel I could have made this dress without the pattern? Yes. But that means it is a good pattern for a beginner, right? It's simple, the a-line of the skirt gives it a nice curve, and if you are one of those belt-y type ladies a belt would perk this right up. It was pretty funny- I had one woman tell me that my hair was pretty when I was getting coffee this morning and I had some girl lean out of her car (while her friend was driving) to yell at me that I "looked awesome". So I guess this dress is a win. What do you think?
